Overnight Summer Camp - How To Choose The Best Weight Loss Camp For Your Child

Monday, January 4th, 2010
Helen Hecker asked:

Twenty-five years ago weight-loss camp campers were mostly teenage girls who were at least 100 pounds or more overweight. The menu usually consisted of food such as beef liver, fish and alfalfa sprouts and the only form of exercise was running and doing sit-ups. The ultimate goal at these overnight summer camps is to lose as much weight as possible in as little time as possible. They were often considered special needs camps. There are also many teen and adult weight loss camps.

Today things are a lot less extreme than they were in those days - approximately 39 percent of the campers are boys, the kids usually need to lose between 21 and 41 pounds, the menus offer a much broader range of food, and the exercise is a lot of fun, with activities that include fun sports like tennis and kayaking. The weight loss camps today emphasize very healthy lifestyles and long-lasting skills that the kids can take home with them and actually put into use.

To summarize, these so-called “fat camps” usually resemble regular overnight summer camps and just happen to specialize in teaching excellent decision-making techniques as they relates to food.

Now according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 16 percent or so of children from ages 6-19 are overweight or obese and this number that has tripled since 1981.

The number of overnight or sleepaway weight loss camps has remained about the same. There are about 16 to 20 of these camps out of 10,000 sleep away camps in the United States alone with some of these having offshoots in other locations. There are many other weight loss camps in other countries.

In most of the overnight summer camps the children will be between the ages of 7 and 12. This age group tends to be most successful because parents have more to say about the child’s eating and exercise habits. Usually bad eating habits are less instilled in the younger children.

All sleepaway fat loss camps work at building good habits, not just dealing out quick fixes. You will find these camps have classes on good nutrition, proper portion control, emotional eating, handling situations like pizza parties, birthday parties and ice cream parties.

You’ll find they teach by example. In the old days weight loss camps offered 1,250 to 1,350 calories each day. Today they’re more realistic, usually about 1,800 to 2,000 calories daily. On the menu along with healthier foods you’ll also find there are hamburgers, pita pizzas, baked potato chips and low-fat baked goods.

It’s long been a misconception that overnight weight loss camps don’t offer enough food and they overwork the kids. It’s actually the opposite. The right amount of food is served and they provide workouts for the kids at the right level. Campers never find they are hungry.

Changing the camper’s behavior is the key to sustaining weight loss. Many campers learn to cook, shop for groceries, order out at restaurants, and work with camp psychologists on managing stress, frustration tolerance, and identifying emotional eating.

Generally the campers want to be there. Years ago when their parents made them go they didn’t want to. Kids are happier that they’re making a change and develop confidence and independence as a result of the experience. They learn to make healthier choices also. Kids learn to feel better, breathe better, run faster and become more active as a result.

Some overnight weight loss camps can cost about $1,000 a week. Many of the camps offer scholarships and that’s worth exploring. Your health insurance may cover some of it because of the weight loss therapy. And some churches run free weight loss camps, but may be harder to find.

Choosing the right summer camp for your child may mean doing a lot of research and checking out reviews of weight loss camps. Talking to parents who have sent their kids to those camps would give you some idea as to the successful experience the child has had. Ask the director of the camp you’re considering if they will give you some names of previous campers’ parents so you can contact them. Cost may be a factor too. There is a wide range when it comes to cost and be sure to compare weight loss summer camp ratings online and offline. Check the public library for Consumer Reports magazine’s ratings.

Any overnight summer camp is great because it will force the child to have structured time in the summer and even traditional overnight camps focus on kid’s fitness and health, serve healthier food and encourage a lot of exercise. If you can’t find or afford a weight loss camp, you should choose a camp anyway even if it’s a special camp like arts or science that has some activity. The important thing is to keep overweight kids active in the summer.

A Guide to Powering your Campsite

Monday, November 23rd, 2009
Kenneth Elliott asked:

Camping and the great joys of experiencing the outdoors, the fresh air, beautiful scenery, peace and quiet, the bird cherping and the ever increasing feelings of peace. Although this is definitly the whole outlook of a camping experience, there are advantages to modern civilization, too, and not all of them have to be left behind. Their is a place for cooking over a fire or having a lighting source other than a kerosene lamp or even having a cell phone, GPS units or other devices that all require some kind of power.

To have these modern conviences their needs to be a power souce to tap into. Most power sources are gas or electric, though liquid fuels like ‘Coleman fuel’ or white gas, kerosene and unleaded gasoline are used as well. If you drive an RV to the campsite, you may be able to power a number of things off the RV, either by connecting to large batteries, or using it as a generator. But most sources will require a self-contained source.

Back in the day the only power source available was kerosene, which was a popular choice for both cooking and lighting. But the unpleasant smell made it less than ideal. Today, most lighting is electric. Coleman-style lamps are everywhere, even though Coleman is far from the only manufacturer. Being copied is the price of producing a successful design.

Solar powered lighting is becoming more common and is a valid source for any campsite. Most campsites, at least during non-winter months, have ample sunshine anywhere outside heavily tree-shaded areas. Photo-voltaic cells are used to absorb all that free energy, storing it up for later use. They convert that radiant energy into electrical power, typically storing it in rechargeable batteries. Depending on the strategy solar cells can power a great majority of a campsite.

The efficiency of contemporary solar cells is so high that lamps can now be used for up to 12 hours, and some have mechanisms for powering other devices as well. One type, the Everlite (http://www.newlite.com), can supply power to recharge cell phones, Blackberries, iPods, GPS units and other devices.

One way solar powered lamps accomplish that amazing task is by using bulbs that use electricity very efficiently - such as LEDs. The older generation will remember LED clocks and watches from the 1970s. Those clocks had red numbers, made from a series of dots or lines composed of Light Emitting Diodes.

Back then, they required substantial power, but they’ve been vastly improved. LEDs (no longer just red) can now produce very bright, natural spectrum light with a minimum of power. For example, LED bulbs used in the home (not solar powered), can last 10 years or more, while consuming much less electricity to illuminate them.

One of the drawbacks of traditional electric Coleman lamps is the need for heavy batteries - either the large, rectangular (and massive) 6 volt type or several D-sized. With modern fluorescent or LED-type lamps that’s no longer necessary. The power requirements are much lower.

An alternative to electrical lamps is the still-popular propane or kerosene. Either can be used as a means of producing light, and they are cost-effective and produce adequate light. But refilling propane devices is less convenient and kerosene still has that unpleasant smell. For those who prefer them, however, they are available and usually at lower cost than solar powered or LED lamps.

Whichever method you prefer, always pack at least two lighting sources - a Coleman-style table lamp with a handle that can be hung on a branch or set down and a flashlight. You’ll use both frequently.

But if a total disconnet from modern conviences is not your ball of wax, they their is one more choice, a portable generator. Although some of these generators could be a little cumbersom, they are still portable enough to carry just about anywhere. Most portable generators run off of gasoline. This is a big drayback because gasoline is so flamable. But a generator can provide all the electricity needed to support a full camp. One other drawback from a generator is the fumes. So, if you like and want to use this choice don’t enclose the generator within any quarters.

Things to Consider When Selecting a Fitness Camp

shijina asked:

Fitness camp has the ability to offer you amazing summertime adventures such as build up healthy habits and turn you into great athlete also. You will come across many fitness camps available for youngsters and other age groups, so you need to consider few steps to pick the right one. First know what you need, you want to get in a better shape or perhaps you simply require to remain in shape. Joining a fitness camp is actually a superb way to this either. You may still not be sure on how to go about locating a right fitness center, which meets your expectations. So the main thing you need to consider when choosing a fitness camp for yourself is level of comfort. In case you are not easy or insecure, you are not probably to remain encouraged to go on daily basis.

So when talking about comfort, we have loads of issues to be considered. Is the chosen fitness camp clean and well organized, with high-tech state of art equipments and gear? Are the equipments in fine repair and it there any body else trained to use those equipments? Is there any comfy place to rest at, plus clean, private restrooms and wash? Added comfort matter comprises patrons. Some of the fitness camps and centers are just like singles clubs. So if you are really serious about the working out, you might not locate the last appealing. In contrast, if the fitness camp caters to ******** body builders, you might also sense scared, or you might only favor a more calm kind of atmosphere.

Another consideration is location. Location is further significant when selecting a fitness camp. Is the health society protected, well mannered area, which you would be happy visiting, even during night times? Is parking opportune and close by, so you would not have to pace very far by yourself? Is it near by enough from your home or may be from your office, were journey won’t turn to be a problem and keep you from presenting on a daily basis? These are each significant things to bear in mind.

Accessibility is another additional chief issue in selecting a fitness camp. Locate out which fitness camp has the time schedule that makes it suitable for you to use. If in case you are paying attention in work-out or other work out classes, see that camp provides you with greatest accessibility. Observe not only if programs are planned sometimes when you could also take help from them, but on top if the coaches are experts.

The price of joining a fitness camp would generally probable to play a key role in your judgment. Do not forget to shop around for a first-class deal, but consider other issues as well along with price factor. The least luxurious fitness camp might have the lowest prices as it has the least facilities. So be always careful while selecting a fitness camp!

Creating Successful Fitness Boot Camps

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Josh Guerrieri asked:

When we first started expanding our camps in Georgia and Ohio, local gyms weren’t too thrilled to see us open up a camp in town. Why? Our workouts were so different and so effective that we started stealing their clients! Unlike many of the gym’s clients, our

campers were sweating their ***** off, reaching new fitness goals, and loving the accountability that stemmed from the camp camaraderie. So what was so special about our camps? Here’s our brief story:

My wife and I both started our careers teaching in inner-city schools in Atlanta, and we gained valuable experience coaching a variety of sports. With that experience, we started a children’s fitness company that focused on group exercise in after-school programs, etc. As the business took off, we saw a new niche developing - people kept asking us if we ran fitness programs for adults. We are both certified personal trainers and former

collegiate athletes, but up until then, most of our work had been with children. Within a few months, however, we started marketing our first adult fitness camp with help from a few trainers we knew from the gym (those trainers now make up our core team).

Our first camp drew 18 people - some of them freebie friends and some of them partial payment campers. We were just looking to get people in the doors. Overall, it went well, but we made a ton of mistakes that we improved on over the next two or three camps. By

the fourth camp, our numbers had tripled, and the camp was running smoothly. By the fifth camp, we were making more money than we had teaching, and we made the decision to run camps full-time. That decision paid off immediately as we were able to devote more time to marketing, recruitment, and planning which launched our attendance well over 100 campers. Years later, we still run a few camps ourselves, but most of our work is dedicated towards helping people start their own camps.

Use these 3 tips when planning your own boot camps!

1. Dynamite workouts - Our workouts are well planned and organized to accommodate every fitness level. This is a real key to success because both the “super athletes” and out of shape folks can co-exist. We’ll scale reps or rounds to suit each level, but everyone is still doing the same workout!

2. Building Camaraderie - This is something we work on from day one and it takes time to create. Here’s a simple tip but many camps overlook it: Know people’s names! Participants need to know that they are not just a number.

3. Have fun - Your workouts should be challenging, but there are many things that you can add to your camps to make them fun as well. Team games, “camper of the week” awards, social outings are all components that create a fun experience.

Bottom line – running fitness camps can be extremely profitable, but if that is your only motive, you may want to reconsider. Helping people get fit and have fun makes the business extremely special!

Boot Camps for Troubled Teen

Monday, August 31st, 2009
Lokesh Monga asked:

What are Boot Camps for Troubled Teens?

Teen boot camps are correctional programs for delinquent youth in a military-style environment. These programs typically emphasize discipline and physical conditioning and were developed as a rigorous alternative to longer terms of confinement in juvenile correctional facilities. Many, but not all, of these programs are followed by a period of probation or some form of aftercare. Boot camps are generally restricted to non-violent or first-time offenders.

The idea of “shock incarceration” as a tough, low-cost alternative to more intensive programming brought about the establishment of military-style boot camps for troubled teens.

Are Boot Camps Effective? Experts agree that a confrontational approach is often inappropriate. Most correctional and military experts agree that a confrontational model, employing tactics of intimidation and humiliation, is counterproductive for most troubled teens. The use of this kind of model has led to disturbing incidents of abuse. For youth with emotional, behavioral, or learning problems, degrading tactics may be particularly inappropriate and potentially damaging. The bullying style and aggressive interactions that characterize the boot camp environment fail to model the pro-social behavior and development of empathy that these youth really need to learn.

Positive changes demonstrated while in the boot camp may not last when a youth returns to his community. Many juveniles report that the program is helpful to them and they feel more positive about their futures. It is unclear, however, whether these attitudes persist after youth leave the boot camp, or whether they are related to actual changes in behavior once a youth returns to his community. Without significant therapeutic intervention while in the program, as well as specialized aftercare following release, boot camp programs have been consistently unsuccessful in “changing” juveniles.

What are the alternatives? Youth who need some form of treatment care require an individualized approach that takes their strengths and needs into account. Programs and policies should be family-centered, including the family in all decision making about a child, as well as culturally and developmentally appropriate. Research has shown that small, family-centered programs are more effective than boot camps in the long term.

You have made the right choice in seeking help. The next step is to contact us. We have a great deal of experience in the treatment care industry. We have worked in the industry. We have lived in the industry. We have seen what works …… and what doesn’t.

Does Your Child Need a Boot Camp for Troubled Teens?

Often when teens struggle with the numerous issues they face in today’s society they become, frankly, quite unpleasant. Thousands of families throughout the country have felt that the best way to get youth back on track is to send them to boot camps for troubled teens. The idea is to both “straighten them out” and to legally punish them in the most painful way possible. However, unreported in both the media and from these programs is the fact that there is very little statistical evidence that boot camps for troubled teens have a long-term impact on the success of the child. In fact, there is mounting evidence that they are both ineffective and in many cases detrimental.

But there are other options to boot camps for troubled teens. InsightPros is here to help.

We will guide you. We will inform you. Take advantage of our knowledge and insight. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
